Your Past Is Merely a Prerequisite for Today

I had the privilege of attending the Fredericksburg Therapeutic Docket Graduation, and I left inspired, encouraged, and reminded of a truth that many of us need to hear:

Your past is merely a prerequisite for your today.

Those words were shared by Delegate Joshua Cole, who serves in the Virginia General Assembly, and they resonated deeply with me. He spoke about how our past experiences—both the victories and the struggles—help shape who we become. Sometimes we have to go through things, overcome things, and learn from things before we can step into the person we are meant to be.

For many people, the mistakes of their past become labels that society never lets them forget. Yet programs like the Therapeutic Docket recognize something important: people are more than the worst decision they have ever made.

The Therapeutic Docket provides justice-involved individuals with an opportunity to address the underlying issues that may have contributed to their criminal behavior.

Through a structured process, participants confront challenges related to mental health, substance use, trauma, and personal responsibility. They are required to take accountability for the harm they caused while actively working toward healing and transformation.

Upon successful completion of the program, pending criminal charges are dismissed. But perhaps even more importantly, participants leave with something far greater than a legal outcome—they leave with a new path forward.

One thing that impressed me today was the number of high-level justice officials who attended and showed genuine support for diversion programs like this. Their presence demonstrated an understanding that transformation often produces better outcomes than incarceration alone. They recognized that when people are given the tools to heal, grow, and become productive members of society, entire communities benefit.

I speak loudly when I say this:

Incarceration alone is never the solution. We need more programs.

We need more opportunities that address root causes rather than simply punishing symptoms.

Organizations throughout our region are doing exactly that.

FailSafe-ERA is a premier reentry organization that provides critical support and resources to individuals impacted by incarceration. They are the only reentry organization in our area offering life-changing educational programming inside local jails. Their Courage to Change curriculum equips participants with practical tools for personal growth and accountability while incarcerated and continues to support them after release. The organization also offers family support groups and youth empowerment initiatives designed to break cycles of incarceration before they begin.

These programs are not just changing individual lives—they are changing family legacies.

I am also honored to represent Conscious Healing and Homes Empowering Recovery, organizations committed to helping individuals overcome substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges. Through trauma-first treatment, recovery support, and stable housing, they provide the foundation people need to heal, rebuild, and move forward into the next chapter of their lives.

These are the kinds of organizations making a real difference across our region. They are creating pathways to recovery, restoration, and hope.

I know what it means to be given another chance. I know what it means to have people and programs believe in you when you are struggling to believe in yourself.

This graduation was a reminder that change is possible.

People can heal.

People can recover.

People can rebuild.

And as Delegate Joshua Cole so powerfully stated, a person’s past is merely a prerequisite for their future.

The question is not where you’ve been.

The question is:

What will you do with the opportunity in front of you today?
