The Power of the Next Right Thing

Life doesn’t usually change in one big, dramatic moment like a snap of the finger or a wiggle of the nose like a “Genie”.

It changes in the quiet, unnoticed decisions we make all day long.

I’ve come to see life as a series of tests—small ones. Not the kind anyone else is grading, but the kind that shape who you become. And if you really pay attention, there are dozens of them every single day.

Not 2 or 3 big moments.

More like 30… 40… maybe even more.

And they’re simple.

The alarm goes off.

Do you stay in bed, negotiating with your thoughts… or do you get up?

You step out of the shower.

Do you hang the towel up… or toss it aside and tell yourself you’ll get it later?

No one is watching in those moments.

That’s what makes them powerful.

Because those are the moments that build integrity.

The Tests No One Sees

We tend to think character is revealed in big decisions.

But the truth is—it’s built in the smallest ones.

Every “next right thing” is a quiet vote for the person you’re becoming.

Do it enough times, and you don’t just make better choices…you become someone who naturally does.

And the opposite is just as true.

Every time we ignore the small things, we slowly train ourselves to look away, to delay, to justify.

It’s never just about the towel.

It’s never just about getting out of bed.

It’s about alignment.

The Moment That Checked Me

I remember a day I was already late for an appointment.

I was rushing across a parking lot, trying to make up time, mentally already behind.

As I ran, I grabbed a piece of gum, threw the wrapper toward a trash can—and kept moving.

It went in… or at least I thought it did.

But out of the corner of my eye, I saw it hit the rim… and bounce back out onto the ground.

And I kept running.

Because I was late.

Because I had somewhere to be.

Because it was “just a wrapper.”

But something didn’t sit right.

It started eating at me.

I knew what I saw.

I knew I caused it.

And I knew I walked away from it.

So I stopped.

Turned around.

Ran back.

Picked up that piece of trash.

And threw it away the right way.

And yes—I missed the appointment.

But when I reflected on that day, I realized something:

The most important thing I did that day… was go back for that wrapper.

Why the Small Things Matter So Much

That moment had nothing to do with trash.

It had everything to do with integrity.

Doing the next right thing isn’t about convenience.

It’s not about being seen.

It’s not even about the outcome.

It’s about who you are when no one is keeping score.

Because every small decision is shaping you.

  • You either become someone who follows through…

  • Or someone who lets things slide.

  • Someone who owns their actions…

  • Or someone who explains them away.

There is no neutral.

The Real Work

The real work isn’t in the big, life-changing moments.

It’s in:

  • Getting up when you said you would

  • Cleaning up what you created

  • Following through on what you started

  • Choosing discipline over comfort—quietly, consistently

That’s where your life actually changes.

That’s where trust in yourself is built.

Final Thought

Doing the next right thing won’t always feel important in the moment.

It might even cost you something—time, comfort, convenience…maybe even an appointment.

But over time, those choices stack.

And one day, you won’t have to think so hard about doing the right thing…

Because it will simply be who you are.

Your life isn’t shaped by the big moments you post about—

it’s built in the small decisions no one ever sees.
