Self-Care Starts in the Spirit: Why Feeding Your Soul Matters

We live in a world that shouts “self-care” from every corner—bubble baths, spa days, vacations, and timeouts. And while all those things are beautiful, I’ve learned through my own journey that real self-care starts long before you pick up a scented candle or book a massage.

True self-care begins in the spirit.

I learned this truth in one of the most unlikely places—a cold, damp jail cell where my life felt like it was falling apart. I was battling mental illness, addiction, shame, and wounds that cut so deeply they were shaping every decision I made. I didn’t know how to help myself. I didn’t know how to care for myself. Honestly, I didn’t even know how to see myself.

And then God sent a woman named Cynthia Lynn into that space.

Cindy came in as a Bible study teacher, but she became a vessel of life-changing truth. She was the first person to show me that my past didn’t define me. She taught me about the immeasurable grace of Jesus Christ and pointed me toward a relationship with Him that could heal the deepest parts of my soul.

Years later, I can say with full joy that her teachings—and her new devotional, “Modern Day Well – No Longer Drinking From the Wells of My Own Making”—continue to speak to me today. That’s why I’m taking a moment to cheer her on and tell you about this heartwarming book now available on Amazon and Kindle.

Here’s Why Feeding Your Spirit IS Self-Care

We take care of our bodies.

We take care of our responsibilities.

We take care of everyone else around us.

But how often do we take care of the part of us that keeps us whole?

Your spirit determines your strength, your resilience, your peace, your clarity, your ability to heal, and your ability to show up for the people you love. When your spirit is neglected, everything else eventually collapses.

What I love about Cynthia Lynn’s 365-day devotional is that it offers a daily rhythm for spiritual nourishment—something simple, consistent, and grounding:

• A Drop from the Well – a thought to center your mind

• Water from the Well – Scripture to anchor you

• Living Water – deeper teaching

• Prayer – space to breathe with God

• Pour It Out – a moment to reflect and release

This is the kind of self-care that heals from the inside out.

Building a Daily Rhythm With God

Your devotional time doesn’t have to be long or complicated. What matters most is consistency and connection. A few minutes every morning can completely shift your day.

Here’s what spiritual self-care looks like for me:

• Waking up and acknowledging God before the world gets loud (around 4am for me!)

• Reading a devotional (Cynthia Lynn’s has now become one of my favorites)

• Sitting still long enough to hear my own thoughts and God’s whisper

• Journaling out the things I need to release (that’s how this blog came to life!)

• Ending with gratitude and intentional showing up for the rest of my day

When I feed my spirit, I show up better as a mother, a wife, a friend, a leader, and a woman who has overcome battles that once tried to bury me.

Self-care is not selfish.

Self-care is sacred.

And it starts with the soul.

Here’s a few Reflection Questions for you:

  1. What parts of your life feel empty, heavy, or tired right now?

  2. Where have you been 'pouring out' more than you’ve been receiving?

  3. How can you create a simple daily rhythm that nourishes your spirit?

  4. What is one spiritual habit you can commit to this week?

  5. When was the last time you allowed God to fill the places you usually try to handle alone?

A Prayer for You

Father,

Thank You for the living water You offer to every weary soul. I lift up the person reading this today.

You know their needs, their wounds, their desires, and the areas of their life that feel empty or overwhelming.

Remind them that real self-care begins with You. Teach them to slow down and let Your presence fill them again.

Strengthen their spirit, renew their mind, and restore their peace. Help them build a daily rhythm that draws them

closer to You—not out of pressure, but out of love. May they drink deeply from Your well and walk in the fullness

of Your grace.

Amen.
